What is a Grass Roots Campaign?

unaffordable2Although billed as a “grass roots” organization, the supporters of extending Light Rail into Virginia Beach, namely Move Hampton Roads and Light Rail Now, are well-organized and well-financed. In fact, out of the over 1/2 million dollars raised by these two Political Action Committees, the donors to Move Hampton Roads average donation to Move Hampton Roads was approximately $16,000.00. Of the donors to Light Rail Now, aside from their corporate sponsors, there were only 63 individual donors who gave an average of $50.71 each, totaling $3,195.00 during the 2012 election cycle.

However a close examination of these sponsors paints a very clear picture of who really stands to profit from Light Rail.
